In January 2000 we sold our first cup of coffee on the steps of Flinders Street Station. In fact, we sold a total of 62 coffees on a 40 degree day...and wondered what on Earth we had gotten ourselves into.
Over the past 7 years we have been able to grow throughout the Melbourne inner city railway network, with a combination of coffee carts and small coffee bars. Later we added Headquarters, a stylish office foyer coffee bar and cafe at Monash and Swinburne University Campuses. Our distribution strategy was to target sites that were non traditional retail spaces where a coffee cart could be wheeled in, and within a couple of days we could be up and running. Melbournians seem to have a fascination with carts; maybe it's the convenience of the locations being their first or last cup of coffee before getting on or off a train, or the intimacy of a cart as opposed to a more traditional coffee shop.
Today Coffee Hq has 16 sites, that are all company owned and operated. We currently employ over 120 staff. The key to our expansion over the years can be attributed to the quality of our staff and the training and development programs that we have developed. Friends are always asking me what makes a good cup of coffee, or where to buy a good coffee. I tell them if they find a barista who looks like he/she has a passion for their work and enjoys what they are doing, then their chances of finding a great coffee are multiplied significantly.
